Rewards and Incentives for Open Science

There has been considerable debate and discussion for many years around the need to move towards more responsible use of metrics. Such a shift is important to support and incentivise open knowledge practices in scholarly research and to address the current publish or perish system that inherently disincentivises progress towards many of the key pillars of open science and open research.

“Open Science leads to significant challenges in how to make Science immediately available to ALL, while balancing the necessary safeguards to protect the interests of different stakeholders in the research arena”

Progress on Open Science: Towards a Shared Research Knowledge System #EUOSPP Final Report

The Open Science Rewards and Incentives Registry will support the development of an academic career structure that fosters outputs, practices and behaviours to maximise contributions to a shared research knowledge system. To this end, in discussion with the OSPP, the Research Data Alliance has committed to spearhead a new collaborative platform to share both the intention and outcomes of pilots and other initiatives taken by different actors that specifically address the academic reward system. All stakeholders will have the opportunity to contribute to this so that everyone can benefit from the innovation of others by sharing what works and what doesn’t in different contexts.
